ACUPUNCTURE

RELAX. BALANCE. HEAL.

HOW IT WORKS

I practice Traditional Chinese Medicine as an additional method to diagnosing disease, and use acupuncture to support the body's natural capacity to heal.

Your body is thought to have over 2,000 acupuncture points connected by meridians (pathways) linking to specific internal organ systems.

Needling an acupuncture point creates a physiological change in your body through stimulating energy (Qi). This is an important understanding as disease is thought to occur when there is a disruption in your body's energy flow or Qi.

Acupuncture points are believed to activate your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) which subsequently cause chemicals to be released. These biochemicals (such as endorphins) create changes that stimulate your body's natural functions, and the ability to regulate and heal itself.

Acupuncture regulates your body's innate drive towards homeostasis, can reduce inflammation and pain, and promotes relaxation.

SYMPTOMS ACUPUNCTURE CAN ADDRESS

THINGS TO REMEMBER IF YOU ARE SCARED OF ACUPUNCTURE

  • Acupuncture is the gentlest form of needling, and it is not anything like getting a “shot” from your doctor. In fact, the needles are very thin (4 times smaller than commonly used medical needles), and they bend when you touch them. They are designed to be applied with little to no pain at all. The sensation may even be described a dull ache or pressure on the skin.

  • We experience pain through the outermost layers of the skin (and we have many layers). Acupuncture needles are quickly inserted past these superficial layers so you most likely will feel nothing at all. Don’t worry, the needles are not going that deep!

  • Remember this is your experience and your treatment. You are in complete control.  We will go at whatever pace you are comfortable with, and we can even start with one, or just a few needles to see how you do. If a needle is bothersome, I’ll pull it out. You always have a voice.

  • There are other options if acupuncture is still not for you. These may include acupressure (stimulating acupuncture points with a finger), moxa (heating a compacted herb above a point to activate it), and cupping (stimulating points using pressure from cups placed on the body).
