THE PATH TO MY LIFES WORK

I had always planned on becoming a doctor, however, it wasn’t until I experienced first-hand the power of nutrition and natural therapies that I realized becoming a naturopathic doctor was the path to my life’s work. Upon returning home from traveling after a year abroad, I began struggling with digestive discomfort that the conventional medical system could not simply explain.  I saw family physicians and specialists over the years after returning and nothing came up abnormal. After experimenting with various treatments on my own and having my health worsen, I knew I was missing something. I turned to naturopathic doctors who discovered and treated the root cause of my symptoms which was an extremely invasive multi-parasitic infection. It was through this experience I realized the importance of integrative medicine and working collaboratively with different doctors utilizing the best of conventional and complementary medicine.

MY EDUCATION

For my undergraduate education I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Calgary. This degree provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge to apply for medical school. Naturopathic medical school at the CNME accredited Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine included 4 years of formal education in medical sciences, and training to interpret clinical signs and symptoms to identify, diagnose, and treat disease.  My clinical education focused on therapies that naturally support and stimulate the body’s innate healing capacity, while focusing on preventing illness long term.

To understand more about the core curriculum of the naturopathic doctor program, this link illustrates a professional comparison of the educational priorities of the following professions: medical doctors, naturopathic doctors, chiropractic doctors, osteopathic doctors, physiotherapists, and registered massage therapists.
